Processing time is the warehouse work itself: pick, pack, label. It runs from the moment your 3PL acknowledges an order to the moment it’s ready for carrier pickup. This is the stage your 3PL controls most directly.
Why It’s a Leading Indicator
When processing time slips, the cause is usually staffing, a WMS bottleneck, or warehouse layout. It shows up before delivery deadlines do. Watch for patterns a monthly average buries: steady all week but spiking every Monday from the weekend backlog, or stretching out during a promotion when the warehouse can’t keep up with volume.
How Brands See It
You can measure this from order timestamps, no 3PL report required. It’s the gap between fulfillment events. Processing time is one slice of total fulfillment time. Isolating it tells you whether a slowdown is the warehouse or the carrier handoff.
